Carrboro wrestlers making big gains
Young Jaguars win for fourth time in six matches
Carrboro High School?s climb up the ladder of area wrestling teams continued last week with the Jaguars? most decisive win to date.Carrboro downed Granville Central, 48-18, in a Carolina-12 Conference dual meet. And it could have been worse.?We automatically give up 18 points most nights,? Carrboro had coach Dewitt Driscoll said. ?We?re still just don?t have all the bodies we need at the upper weights, and we forfeit those three matches.?Automatically giving up three 6-0 decisions at 160, 195 and 220 pounds is one of the few glaring weaknesses the young Jaguars have. Other than that, most of the young Carrboro team has been scoring well, and Driscoll has every reason to believe that most of his starters can qualify for next month?s state tournament.Eight Jaguars won their respective matches at Granville County ? five of them by falls.Tuesday?s victory was Carrboro?s fourth in its last six dual meets, and the Jaguars improved to 8-5 on the season.Freshman wrestler Dante Veltri earned his 14th pin of the season by felling Jeremy Paddock in 1:02. That was the eighth time this season that Veltri has gotten a victory within 90 seconds. He improved to 15-6 individually at 106 pounds. Notably, he?s never been pinned.Veltri is one of four Jaguars with double-digit wins. The lone senior in Tuesday?s lineup, Sergei Callaham-Bishop (118 pounds) notched his 11th pin of the year and improved to 12-8 when he pinned Tevin Hayes in 1:38 Tuesday.Junior George Carpenter improved to 14-3 with an 11-6 decision over Nolan Malugen at 113 pounds. Carpenter is riding a six-match win streak.?Sergei was a state qualifier. He?s been doing well,? Driscoll said. He noted that Veltri has yet to lose to a 2A opponent and that Carpenter recently pinned the state?s No. 6-ranked 113-pounder.Junior Carson McKay (170 pounds) got his 10th win of the season against four losses with an 11-8 decision Tuesday over Evan Parrott. ?He?s really coming along,? Driscoll said.Carrboro freshman Trenton Davis (120) was on the cusp of a 10th win after his opponent withdrew after 3 minutes Tuesday. That left Davis 9-3 on the year.Davis has been serving as a sort of utility man, splitting time at 120 and 126 with Chapel Hill High School junior transfer Stephen Dreher.Other winners Tuesday included sophomore Alex Gilligan (132), sophomore Keegan Cordell (145) and freshman Maxim Gaut (152), all of whom won by pins. Carrboro was scheduled to wrestle Southeast Raleigh this weekend (see www.newsobserver.com/sports for results) and will visit Eden Morehead next weekend for the annual Sara Wilkes Invitational.
