Mexico Beach still has a fire department. But the city doesn't have many people to respond to fires.
The volunteer firefighters voted to quit Tuesday night in protest of the strained relations with city hall and City Administrator Chris Hubbard in particular.
The issues have been going-on for months. But they came to a head a several weeks back, when city council members decided against budgeting individual firefighter payments for responding to fires.
They're also upset with the results of the Bay County sheriff's office investigation into the city's Public Safety Department, specifically the treatment of firefighters by a few members of the police department.
No word as to how the city plans to respond to any emergency, if firefighters stick to their decision Tuesday night to quit the department.
